Description

Photorealistic Lens FX Webinar

In just over an hour you can master the subject of photorealistic lens FX .

One of the secrets that separates professional compositors from the others is their ability to add photorealistic lens fx to their shots. They do this to preserve photorealistic consistency with surrounding shots as well as to elements added to existing shots. How should you comp a cgi element into a live action plate with chromatic aberration? How can you add bokeh to match surrounding shots? And when is a diffraction glow never a good idea?

Chromatic aberration, bokeh and diffraction glows are but a small part of the rich complexity of live action shot through a camera lens that gives it that “real” feel. Learn what causes them, how to replicated them digitally, the proper compositing math and the correct layering order for a dozen major lens fx. This is a software agnostic webinar so you can use it with your favorite compositing software.

I enjoyed the webinar on Photorealistic Lens FX, as that is something that has become important in my world of 3D rendering. Through trial and error I have learned to emulate lens profiles as well as adding the Bokeh/Chromatic Aberration to my CG render passes. Although not always having to match real-world plates, it adds a lot of realism to full CG renders when applied lightly.

Overall, I thought the webinar was extremely solid, and the best take away is the payoff at the end where it shows the all so critical order of operations! The concepts covered and the breakdown of the various lens attributes I would say is similar to breaking down mathematical concepts in a way that makes it easy to grasp. One gem of information that was in there was driving home the 8-bit versus HDR 10-bit images and overlay modes that correspond….this is something that I have grappled with trying to work on web delivery content and trying to keep the values clamped to keep them safe.
